What I’m curious about with GPT-6 Astra

The new model has me thinking about research, unfamiliar software, and how to ask better questions.

GPT-6 Astra was announced yesterday. I’ve been looking forward to seeing what comes after Sol, so I spent some time reading about it.

The part that caught my attention was its ability to work with software and scientific data. OpenAI’s examples go beyond answering a question in a chat: the model can inspect information, use tools, and work through a longer task. That’s a claim I want to explore in practice. The Astra announcement explains what OpenAI has tested.

Where I could use it

I’m interested in robots that have to deal with uneven, changing ground. There isn’t one clean question to answer. Mechanical design, sensor readings, control, and the environment all affect each other.

I’d like to use a model to help me follow those connections. If a rover is vibrating more than expected, what should I check first? Is it the terrain, the suspension setting, the mounting of the sensor, or something wrong with how I’m reading the data?

A useful answer would help me decide what to measure next. It would also tell me when there isn’t enough information to choose between those explanations.

I’m curious about using it while reading papers, too. I sometimes understand the general idea but get stuck on one assumption or a step in the method. Being able to ask about that specific gap could help. I would still go back to the paper and check whether the explanation matches it.

What I want to learn

I’m starting to think that asking a good question is a skill of its own. “Fix this” gives very little to work with. Describing the setup, what I expected, what happened, and what I’ve already checked seems much more useful.

I’m excited about Astra, but I don’t want to judge it from a launch video alone. I want to see how it handles a small, real problem where I can check the answer. That feels like a good place to start learning what it can help with.

The launch is rolling out in stages, so an announcement doesn’t mean everyone has access immediately. For now, I’m making a list of things I’d like to try.
